Summer

Heat, fast-growing kikuyu and the odd storm. Keep the mower high and the mulch thick.

December

  • Pre-Christmas tidy for visitors
  • Mow weekly and keep the height up
  • Deep water early, especially new plants

January

  • Mow higher, around 4–5cm, so the lawn shades its own roots
  • Water deeply before 9am, not lightly every evening
  • Top up mulch to 75mm before the next heatwave

February

  • Watch for armyworm: brown patches that spread overnight
  • Light trim on hedges to keep them dense
  • Deadhead roses and summer flowers

Autumn

The best planting season in western Sydney, and the time to fix the clay before winter.

March

  • Autumn feed for lawns as the heat eases
  • Start planting natives while the soil is still warm
  • Clear summer weeds before they seed

April

  • Aerate compacted clay and spread gypsum
  • Plant shrubs and hedges for spring growth
  • Last hard prune of summer-flowering shrubs

May

  • Rake leaves off lawns so they do not smother the grass
  • Mowing slows to every two to three weeks
  • Divide clumping plants and grasses

Winter

Slow growth, rose pruning and the fight against bindii before it sets prickles.

June

  • Treat bindii in lawns before it sets prickles
  • Mow every four to six weeks
  • Plan winter pruning

July

  • Prune roses and deciduous trees
  • Second round of bindii control
  • Tidy hedges before the spring flush

August

  • Feed lawns late in the month
  • Prepare beds with compost for spring planting
  • Check and repair edging

Spring

Everything grows at once. Feed, mow often, lay turf and mulch before the heat.

September

  • Top dress and level bumpy lawns
  • Restart regular mowing
  • Plant herbs, vegetables and summer annuals

October

  • Mow every one to two weeks as kikuyu takes off
  • Prune spring-flowering shrubs once they finish
  • Lay new turf while it can establish before summer

November

  • First summer trim for hedges
  • Mulch every bed before the heat arrives
  • Check drip lines and timers
